Flyover Country is a National Science Foundation funded offline mobile app for geoscience outreach and data discovery. Flyover Country – Flight Map for Android, as the app is called, analyzes a given flight path and caches relevant map data and points of interest (POI), and displays these data during the flight, without in flight WiFi. You just got to enter from where you’re taking off, and where you are heading to and the app does the rest. You can download Flyover Country – Flight Map for free from Google Play Store.
Once you enter the starting point and destination info, Flyover Country – Flight Map for Android caches relevant map data and points of interest (POI) by analyzing your flight path. By downloading only the data relevant to a particular flight path, cache sizes remain reasonable, therein allowing for a robust experience without an internet connection. The app is reasonably easy to use. Click on two or more points on the map to specify your flight path, followed by clicking on ‘Load path’ in the top right corner to view the data associated with the path. Select ‘Save for offline’ to store the data and associated articles on your phone for offline use. You can later access the saved paths from the ‘Saved’ menu. You can toggle ‘GPS’ to the on position in the side menu. Doing so will enable position tracking, speed, heading, and altitude information to be accessed from the map view. The ‘Trip Mode’ – also accessed from the side menu – provides a wide strip of data.
Apart from tracking flight paths, the app also comes handy in road trips, hiking, and other outdoor activities such as field trips and geologic field work. Compared with flights, ‘car/foot’ mode provides a narrower but more detailed geologic map with detailed unit descriptions and metadata. The UI layout is user friendly. The app is also stable and responsive. Flyover Country requires AOS 4.1+.
