The most striking feature of iBooks iPhone app is its bookshelf like interface, with the downloaded books arranged in a virtual shelf within the app. Also called as the library, the bookshelf lists and displays the thumbnails of all the books you own or buy in an orderly fashion. The arrangement in the library can be altered according to the user’s wish. The books can be bought from the Apple’s bookstore through the in-app purchases. A small excerpt from can downloaded and viewed for free from the book you wish. There are options for viewing the chapter list, changing the size and font of characters, setting up bookmarks and so on. The brightness can be adjusted with an additional option for the same. A search engine is also available within the app providing quick and accurate results in finding any character, keyword or phrase.
The page numbers including the remaining pages of the book are displayed at the bottom. There are also a variety of six fonts, eleven font sizes and three colors to choose from. Another important feature is that any word or phrase can be highlighted during the read and just a single tap and hold on the highlighted portion enables it to be checked using the inbuilt dictionary or the Google. The highlighted portion can also be shared via Facebook, Twitter and other similar platforms. The application also supports PDF viewing. The only drawback is that the books can only be bought and downloaded through the bookstore. The application neither supports the use of any other books outside the iBooks store nor does it allow the downloaded books to be used in any other platform other than that of the Apple. For using the books outside iBooks store, they have to be synced using iTunes 10.5.3 or later.
