Android HIFI App Review

| August 16, 2012 | 0 Comments

Apple traditionally keeps its technology close to its chest. Sharing of any sorts with its competitors is a strict no-no. For example, AirPlay is a proprietary streaming protocol locked down only to work in Apple. But now an app has been emerged – Android HIFI – that lets your Android phone also become an AirPlay receiver. Android HIFI app may be downloaded free of cost from Google Play Store.

How Android HIFI works?

Android HIFI app is the result of some background job done by an XDA developer, who extracted the RSA private key for AirPlay and made it ‘public’. Using the app, you can play music or podcasts from your Mac, your iPhone, iPad, iTunes, or iPod touch through your Android phone’s speakers. Android HIFI app is one such application that gives importance to its functionality rather than its looks. The design of the interface is pretty basic to the say the least. But given the feature it offers, most of us will be more than OK to overlook this aspect of the application.

In terms of features, in the app, you’ll be able to adjust the delay, so that it is possible to play in sync with other AirPlay receivers, or sync with the video when watching movie. Further, the app will auto mute if there is an incoming call. Also, Android HIFI is artificial intelligent enough to reduce the volume if you unplug your headset or your Bluetooth device is disconnected to avoid a noisy surprise. Finally, the app is designed to run in the background as a service, without hogging much battery.

Android HIFI app is compatible with Android OS versions 2.2 (Froyo) and upwards. A download size of just 213KB means it won’t eat up much of your phone memory either.

Conclusion

Android HIFI is an AirPlay compatible app for Android. It uses a reverse engineered version of AirPlay protocol to open up your Android device to music/podcast streaming from Apple device. Performance wise, the app does really well for a reverse engineered application. The user interface is basic at best. Overall, a handy app to own if you think your loyalties are a bit split between your Apple devices and Android phone.
