Rainbowtail for iPhone is a clever mix of puzzling and role playing. In the game, you can collect pokeman like creatures called ‘Pets’. Each pet can be collected by buying an egg through the game – this is where freemium kicks in – or randomly earning it throughout levels and game play. Each of the egg contains a pet with varying level of rarity and ability. The pets will join your team and help you to use bonus attacks on gems on each level, to clear the sludge and smash your way to the highest possible score. The pets also level up as you feed them gems, therein giving you a compelling reason to go back and complete levels many times over in order to collect both gems and stars to help them progress to other worlds.
Rainbowtail for iPhone has a storyline that revolves around these pets, including Darktail that is ruining the quirky and brightly animated countryside with his ‘sludge’. In each level, your challenge is to clear the sludge or earn a certain number of points. At the end of each world is a boss level, wherein a golem wants to arrest you for releasing Darktail – at least that is what it thinks. The game has a steep learning curve. First time players might find it a bit difficult to crack. But the crux of the game lies with collecting and evolving your pets, which does make the game a whole lot easier.
